Surgical Management of Primary Lung Cancer: Introduction

Although surgery has been the mainstay of treatment for lung cancer for over 60 years, during the last decade there have been substantial changes in the approach. For many years, lung surgery was simply a major resection through a posterolateral thoracotomy incision. Current additional treatment options include minimally invasive surgery, new surgical techniques, and multimodality therapies. These changes require a different understanding and approach to evaluation of the potential candidate for an operation.
